HISTORICAL + LEGAL

THE PAST
MATTERS.
THE PROJECT
IS INDEPENDENT.

MÀV is a modern project built around a historic vessel.

This archive brings together photographs, films, technical records, publications, voyage information and other material connected to Moulin à Vent and the broader history surrounding the vessel.

Our goal is to make that history accessible while clearly distinguishing the documented past from the independent modern MÀV project.

01

PROJECT INDEPENDENCE

Moulin à Vent is an independent modern project and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or associated with The Cousteau Society, the Cousteau family, or their affiliated organizations.

References to Jacques-Yves Cousteau, Calypso, Alcyone and the Cousteau era are presented solely as part of the documented history of Moulin à Vent and the historical context in which the vessel was developed and operated.

Moulin à Vent is a project of Once Was Lost Stewardship Initiative, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

02

THE ARCHIVE

The MÀV historical archive is a developing digital record assembled for historical, documentary, educational and research purposes.

It includes material gathered from publications, archives, institutions, private collections, historical websites, contributors and other sources. The archive is not intended to represent a complete catalog of every surviving record, nor is it a copyright or ownership registry.

New evidence may change dates, captions, attribution, voyage details or other historical information. Records will be refined as better source material becomes available.

03

SOURCES + ATTRIBUTION

Archive records identify the source through which material was located or obtained whenever that information is known.

A listed source is not necessarily the original photographer, author, filmmaker, publisher, creator, copyright owner or current rights holder.

Historical photographs and documents are frequently copied, republished, separated from their original captions, or circulated without reliable metadata. We make reasonable efforts to trace provenance and provide accurate attribution, but some credits may be incomplete, uncertain or incorrect.

When better information becomes available, we will update the archive.

04

RIGHTS + LICENSING

Unless specifically stated on an individual archive record, the inclusion of historical material on this website does not mean that MÀV or Once Was Lost Stewardship Initiative owns the copyright, that the material is in the public domain, or that it is licensed for unrestricted reuse.

Where copyright, licensing or rights information is known and reasonably verified, it may be included with the individual record. Many records currently do not contain complete copyright or licensing information.

Nothing on this website grants visitors rights to reproduce third-party archival material beyond rights they may independently have under applicable law.

05

DIGITAL REMASTERING

Some historical photographs are digitally remastered to improve clarity and viewing quality.

Remastering is intended to preserve the original scene and historical content while improving the legibility of degraded source material.

Where an image has been remastered, the archive may identify it as DIGITALLY REMASTERED or REMASTERED FOR VIEWING.

When both an original source image and remastered version are available, the archive architecture may eventually support comparison between them.

06

CORRECTIONS + RIGHTS INQUIRIES

Historical archives improve when better information surfaces.

If you can identify a photographer, author, location, date, person, source or rights holder—or believe material has been incorrectly attributed—please contact us.

We also welcome contact from photographers, authors, publishers, archives and other rights holders regarding attribution or material appearing in the archive.

Credible correction and rights requests will be reviewed and the archive may be updated, credited, restricted or removed where appropriate.

07

PRIVACY + TERMS

MÀV collects limited personal information when visitors choose to join the email list, contact the project, submit a project inquiry, or contribute material to the historical archive.

Our Privacy Policy explains what information is collected, how it is used and the choices available to visitors.

Our Terms of Use explain the conditions governing use of the website, historical archive, maps and submission systems.
